If you’re looking for the best plant stores in New York City you’ve come to the right place. I was a botanical bro long before the plant boom and have spent years cultivating relationships with my local NYC plant shops.
I’ve found the shops with the most knowledgable staff, widest variety of plants and the cutest pots. For those of us who treat our plant like kids finding a good NYC plant store is as important as finding a good primary physician.
So in an effort to help my friends out I’ve curated this list of the best plant stores in New York City. I hope you find it useful, so without further ado lets jump in!

Tips for New York City Plant Shopping
- For those just starting out in plant parenthood, Home Depot, Lowes & Trader Joes will be the most cost effective options. They generally stock basic plants, but gems can be found randomly and sporadicly.
- Check for signs of unhealthy plants! Bugs and over-watering are the two biggest to look out for. Generally if new leaves are coming in its a good indication the plant is healthy and growing.
- Be patient! Plants can be expensive, especially the “trendy” ones. Facebook marketplace, sales, and markdowns on plants needing a little TLC are great ways to save some coin.
#15. Union Square Green Market
Every Wednesday, Friday & Saturday there’s a greenmarket on the north end of Union Square Park that’s home to some of the best plant shops in New York City.
The selection is wide enough to warrant a visit and best of all the plants are sold at a reasonable price. There is something so serene about a weekend stroll through the market, and the plants are a plus.
Among the vendors two of my favorites are Petal Plants and Fantastic Gardens. The plants they sell are healthy and thriving, just waiting for somebody to bring them home.
Address: Union Square W &, E 17th St, New York, NY 10003
Rosecrans combines two of my biggest loves, plants and coffee. They’re a cute cafe in the Greenwich Village that doubles as one of the plant stores New York City has to offer.
The second the door swings open the air is filled with incredible floral scents, and once you walk through to the back coffee fills the air. It’s like a rollercoaster for your nostrils.
Rosecrans impressively fits a good selection of indoor house plants into the small shop. Just because its not the biggest doesn’t mean it isn’t one of the best plant shops in NYC!
And allow me to add that the bouquets are beautiful, making this an ideal spot for a date with that special someone.
Generally tables are taken during the morning hours, but that’s okay since you can drink your coffee while perusing one of the best plant shops NYC has to offer.

#13. Green Fingers Market
With additional locations in Milan and Tokyo, Green Fingers Market is not only one of the best plant stores New York City has, it’s one of the best internationally.
The store has a vintage vibe and an abundance of green foliage that has all my botanical bros drooling. By offering a variety of both large and small houseplants it’s hard to walk out empty handed, which I know from personal experience.
Along with plants and pots, they also sell hand selected vintage clothing. This way both you & your houseplants can walk out with new and trendy drip.
Address: 5 Rivington St, New York, NY 10002
#12. Chelsea Garden Center
Okay before you hop on the subway to Chelsea, I want you to know that the Chelsea Garden Center is actually in Brooklyn… although its a bit confusing at first you’ll be glad you visited since it’s one of the best plant shops in NYC.
By being in Brooklyn (where real estate is lesser of a premium than Manhattan) the Chelsea Garden Center is the first sizable New York City plant store on our list.
This means that not only is there a wider variety of large plants, there’s also usually more than one of any particular species. This way you can dig and find the healthiest, happiest houseplant to take home with you.
The Chelsea Garden Center is also one of the best plant stores in New York City because they’re one of the few to offer outdoor gardening equipment and plants.
Just because we live in tiny apartments doesn’t mean we can’t be gardeners!
Address: 87 Havemeyer Street, Williamsburg NY & 444 Van Brunt Street, Red Hook NY
Made for “the urban gardener” GRDN is breath of fresh air in the bustling city landscape. Everything seems to slow down in this NYC plant store, leaving plenty of time to smell the roses, literally.
They’ve done a great job cultivating a space that feels homey and welcoming. It’s a one of the best plant stores in New York City to get apartment inspo, since the way they decorate is what most plant people are after.
The store is always well stocked with gardening tools, planters, soils and supplements. They even have a small home and apothecary section that’s worth checking out during a visit.
Address: 103 Hoyt St, Brooklyn, NY 11217
#10. Dahing Plants
Dahing Plants is one of the best plant stores in New York City when when in search of something big. The shop classifies their houseplants in tiers like full size, large, and huge, and they really mean it when they say huge!
And with free delivery on orders over $75 getting that big houseplant home just got a little easier.
They also have one of the widest selections of houseplants in the city. Whenever I’m in Chinatown I make sure to make a pit stop because I never know what gem they’ll have in stock on any given day.
Dahing Plants also runs one of best websites out of all the New York City plant stores since they have an option to “show inventory photos”. This way you get an actual visual on the plant you’ll be receiving rather than shooting in the dark with a stock image.
Far too often ordering a plant online is like ordering off a picture menu at a restaurant only for your food to come out sloppy and with day old ingredients. But Dahing has that taken care of with their “show inventory” feature on their website.
Address: 289 Grand St, New York, NY 10002
#9. Natty Garden
This black owned plant store is the quintessential neighborhood nursery. It is staffed with knowledgable and welcoming folks eager to help.
Owner Glenroy Mahfood channels his Rastafarian roots into the store, and it’s visible from the logo to the name. He believes that we should all aim to live a healthier lifestyle and uses plants as a means to help New Yorkers do that.
Encouraging locals to grow their own produce, Natty Garden sells a variety of fruit and vegetable plants. They even makes custom planters, so no matter how small your apartment is there’s no excuse not to garden.
They have two locations in Brooklyn ready to fulfill New Yorkers gardening needs. Whether visiting to pick out a low light plant or deciding what herb to grow this year, Natty Garden is among the best plant stores in New York City.
I do push for people to buy plants to help [fight] global warming. You can just have a plant in your windowsill. You don’t have to grow a tree in your yard to do your part.
Glenroy Mahfood via New York Daily News
Address: 636 Washington Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238 & 383 Marcus Garvey Blvd, Brooklyn, NY 11221
#8. Casey’s Flower Studio
Even those just walking by Casey’s Flower Studio can’t help but be drawn in by array of plants out front. The colorful display serves as a welcome to one of the best plant stores in New York City.
At its core however Casey’s Flower Studio is a family owned florist with a focus on events and special occasions. Those looking to find the best florist NYC has to offer need look no further.
Over the course of their 35 years in business Casey’s Flower Studio has developed relationships with horticulturists all over the world. Having such a wide reach means they can fulfill requests to make that special day a little more memorable.
Address: 1 Greenwich Ave, New York, NY 10014
#7. Urban Garden Center
Throughout their 60+ years in business the Urban Garden Center has grown a cult following that has forced them to keep moving to bigger locations. Their current home in Harlem boasts 20,000 square feet of green, luscious goodness.
The sheer size of this NYC plant store allows them to stock a lot of bulky products other shops don’t have the space for. It’s one of my preferred spots when I’m looking for organic soil and fertilizers.
In their third generation of ownership it’s safe to say the folks at the Urban Garden Center know what they’re talking about. I never hesitate to ask for help or recommendations since they’ve never steered me wrong!
With such expertise behind the wheel I have no doubt the Urban Garden Center will continue to be one of the best plant stores in New York City for years to come.
Address: 1640 Park Ave, New York, NY 10035
#6. PlantShed Cafe
Okay allow me to be the first to say this New York City plant store won’t be the cheapest one you stop at, but their beautifully curated collections warrant a visit.
PlantShed Cafes seem to be everywhere (5 locations in Manhattan) so finding one shouldn’t be a problem. Most of these NYC plant stores aren’t that big but they’re able to fit a shocking amount of plants.
They also double as one of the best florists in NYC, catering weddings and corporate events. There are bouquets and individual flowers as well for those in search of something special before a special occasion.
PlantShed also offers programs for those looking to get flowers by subscription. New Yorkers have the choice of getting flowers weekly, bi weekly or monthly to keep their apartments and offices looking and smelling great.
Address: Multiple stores throughout NYC
#5. Tula House
Tula House is located in Greenpoint Brooklyn, and the fact that even its neighborhood is green means it has to be one of the best plant stores in New York City.
Carrying all the basic plants and pots, where Tula really sets itself apart is in their dedication to quality. They mix their own custom soils and sell them to the public!
By keeping production in house they guarantee the highest quality and freshest product for their customers. No need to worry about bugs or bacteria here folks.
Also worth mention, every Thursday New Yorkers can bring in unwanted houseplants in exchange for store credit. It’s a great way to swap plants that no longer fit the space or design for new ones.
Address: 59 Meserole Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11222
#4. The Sill
The Sill is not only one of the best plant stores in New York City, but nation-wide. The company was founded in 2012 in tiny walk walk up in Chinatown and has gone on to sprout locations in 4 different states.
The woman-owned NYC plant store is the best for those just beginning to dabble in plants. They attach labels like beginner friendly, pet friendly, and low light tolerant making it extremely easy to find plants that fit your needs.
And for those of you who don’t have enough time to scroll through all the options there is an online quiz that helps you find your perfect plant match. Think of a teenage magazine quiz, but made for plant ladies and botanical bros.
Address: Multiple stores throughout NYC
#3. Living with Green
Living with Green is a New York City plant store located on the Upper East Side that serves as your friendly planty neighbors.
They make themselves incredibly helpful, offering a dedicated email you can send photos of unhappy plants to. This way they can help you troubleshoot the problem. Not many of the other plant stores in New York City offer service like that!
And for the serious buggers they even do home visits and consultations. They’ll come over to help with something as simple as repotting a big plant or as complex as assessing your apartment’s lighting to find the best collection for your space.
In terms of their store inventory, this is one of the best plant stores in New York City to visit when looking for unique houseplants. Sure, they carry the usual, but every once in a while they’ll have a gem in their midst waiting for you to come by and pick it up.
Address: 324 E 81st St, New York, NY 10028
#2. Greenery Unlimited
Greenery Unlimited is the most beautiful plant store in New York City. There, I said it. If I could pitch a tent and camp out here I would gladly live out the rest of my days. I’d even happily help customers, no need to put me on the payroll.
Now it’s not a giant shop, but there’s always a decent selection of common and rare plants to choose from. It seems half the time I visit there’s some sort of sale going on so leaving empty handed is a rare occurrence.
They can be a little pricey but shelling out the extra cash has always been worth it to me. These are some of the healthiest plants you’ll find in the city. The care they give each plant is evident which is why I consider it one of the best plant stores in New York City.
This NYC plant shop also gives back to the community, donating plants and supplies to community gardens, nursing homes and schools so everybody can enjoy the greenery.
Address: 91 West St, Brooklyn, NY 11222
#1. Plant District on 28th
If you only have time to visit one plant shop in NYC, may I suggest all of 28th St? Most of the best plant stores New York City has to offer line the block between 6th and 7th Avenue in what’s called the Flower District.
It’s like speed dating houseplants. There are times I have to say no to a plant I like because I think to myself, “what if I find something better beyond store #3?”.
Since the shops are in close proximity to each other they all have to keep prices at a reasonable rate. There’s no way they can charge a ridiculous price if the store down the block has the same plant half off.
And with the sheer volume of plants on the block New Yorkers are all but guaranteed to find whatever they’re after. Its the go-to spot for rare and unique houseplants.
Address: 28th St between 6th & 7th Ave.
Within the flower district some of my favorite stores include Jamali, Tropical Plants & Garden, Foliage Garden and Foliage Paradise.
