Chelsea Piers protesters furious Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis invited to speak during NYC Pride Month

MANHATTAN, New York — Protesters took to Chelsea Piers on Sunday, furious that the Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, was invited to speak at a private event.

“I’m here to heckle cops. Yell Ron DeSantis and let transphobes and bigots know there are consequences for their actions,” said protestor Mike Dunn.

In March, Governor DeSantis signed into law a parental rights bill which prohibits school instructions on sexual orientation and gender identity for younger students. Critics have labeled it an attack on the LGBTQ+ community, calling it a ‘Don’t Say Gay’ hate law.

“We’re here to show support for the LGBTQ+ community and tell Ron DeSantis we won’t stand for him to speak in our backyard,” said Brandon Cuicchi.

The event was sponsored by a conservative Jewish group called the Tikvah Fund. DeSantis was the closing speaker on Saturday afternoon.

Protestors are angry not just as the governor, but also at Chelsea Piers for agreeing to host the event. The timing is also a source of ire – June is Pride Month, something many New Yorkers embrace.

City Councilman Erik Bottcher represents the district, and says it was a teacher who helped save his life.

“I’m from a rural area. I had a teacher who came to me, knew I was struggling, that I was different. That is why I am alive today,” Bottcher said.

DeSantis’ speech was called ‘The Florida Model and Why It’s good for Religious America.”

Many speculate he is setting his focus on the White House.
