On Friday evening, June 25, the annual Drag March, a long-standing pre-Pride parade tradition came roaring back with post-COVID color, creativity, general craziness and a whole lot of joy.
Huge crowds of people put their imaginations to work, creating wonderful looks that — two hours prior to the actual march — resembled Wigstock in a bottle, which was appropriate as Tompkins Square Park was the original site for the legendary drag festival back in the ’80s.
As in previous years, Hucklefaery led the circle that preceded the march, reminding the crowd of some of their ideals and goals, as well as transmitting the wish of elder stateswoman Rollerena, the 73-year-old roller skating gay icon. Announced by Hucklefaery and repeated loudly by the crowd, the self-described “Fairy Godmother ” proclaimed, “May all your dreams roll your way.”
