Detectives are investigating an Upper East Side shooting on Tuesday night that left a 20-year-old man injured.
Police said the victim was found shot inside a Tesla vehicle at the corner of East 96th Street and 1st Avenue at about 7:45 p.m. on Jan. 4.
Officers from the 19th Precinct, in responding to a 911 call about the shooting, found the victim with a bullet wound to his right leg.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police believe the 20-year-old man had been initially shot near the corner of East 84th Street and 1st Avenue, and the driver continued on the pedal until he came to a halt on 96 Street and 1st Avenue. He was swiftly transported to Weill Cornell hospital by EMS in stable condition.
A cavalcade of officers and squad cars descended upon both intersections, closing the area off while conducting their investigation.
A handgun decorated with golden stars was recovered laying in a bike lane beside a trash bag on 84th Street. It was later determined by detectives that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.
