Police are looking for the violent crook who knocked a mother and her son down a flight of stairs during a robbery attempt gone bad at a Chinatown subway station on Saturday.
The fall left the 58-year-old mother critically injured with an apparent brain injury, published reports indicated.
Law enforcement sources said the incident happened at about 9:40 a.m. on July 17, as the 58-year-old woman and her 22-year-old son were walking up a stairwell at the Canal Street station, near the N line.
That’s where, police reported, the crook confronted them and attempted to yank a backpack away from the 22-year-old son — but that caused the son to lose his balance on the stairwell.
Published reports indicated that the son reached for his mother in an attempt to prevent the fall, but that sent both of them tumbling down the stairwell. The robber, meanwhile, fled back into the subway station to parts unknown, police reported.
Officers from the 5th Precinct and NYPD Transit District 2 responded to the incident. EMS rushed the mother to a local hospital, where she’s listed in critical condition. Her son was not injured in the attack.
On Saturday night, the NYPD released video footage of the suspect walking through a turnstile gate. He’s shown in the video wearing a white bandana around his neck, an olive green t-shirt and black pants with white stripes down the sides.
